overall great arrangements September 14, 2005 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Overall, the book has many great arrangements (particularly "Ordinary People" and "Stay With Me"). Those songs can sound just like the original. Some of the songs don't translate as well (usually the ones with less piano). However, if you're a fan of John Legend, I definitely recommend the book overall.
Genius; John Legend Makes the Piano a "Cool" R&B Instrument---Again! September 5, 2005 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Not only is John Legend's debut album GET LIFTED one of the most soulful, sincere R&B albums of latter part of 2004 and majority 2005, but the piano music within this song book is brilliant. Legend uses a lot of of single note low notes in the left hand along with a few interspersed left hand chords making the music simple and subtle hence giving off a soulful vibe. The feel of the music is just brilliant because he keeps it so restrained and lets his soulful voice accentuate the brilliant lyrics. John Legend like similar artists such as Alicia Keys makes the piano a cool instrument in R&B again. In so much of contemporary R&B, there is so much use of synthesizers and such little use of acoustic piano. John Legend keeps the spirit of piano alive in R&B music. If you love the album and you are a singer, pianist, or guitarist, you will certainly like the music to play and perform over and over again. I don't think GET LIFTED ever grows old.
