5 out of 5 stars John Legend   December 28, 2006
John Legend is amazing. This album is a must for anybody that listens to music regardless of the genre. The piano and his voice create a pleasurable listening experience that is often lacking in much of the music that is released today.

4 out of 5 stars Get This Album "Get Lifted"!   November 18, 2006

John Legend has been labelled as the male counterpart of Alicia Keys for a reason! From his powerful, soulful, gritty vocals to his remarkable songwriting abilities to his equally stunning display of musicianship (prior to making this album, he did background vocals and other duties for Kanye West, Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys Twista, amongst others), John Legend is a truly gifted artist. With the help of some top-notch producers (Kanye West, Dave Tozer, etc.), guest artists (Kanye West, Snoop Dogg and lesser-known Hip-Hop violinist Miri Ben-Ari) and others, John Legend has crafted his debut album, "Get Lifted". Not only does this put John Legend's stellar talents on full display, but the album also shows his abilities to incorporate elements of other genres (especially Hip-Hop) into his brand of RB/Soul.br /br /Although John Legend fails to deliver on the promises he made on piano-driven album opener "Lets Get Lifted" (excluding the preceding "Prelude") - "I know you're getting tired / Of the same old thing / When I'mma break the rules / Gonna change the game", he says ever so boldly - that doesn't mean that is album is terrible. As a matter of fact, it's anything but - John Legend's lent his helping hand on the songwriting and production boards of many of the album's tracks. br /br /As great as many of the album's songs are, the highlights aren't that hard to weed out. Second single "Ordinary People", undoubtedly the best song on the album, is a piano-driven ballad where John Legend's raw, soulful voice sings true-as-can-be lyrics about the ups, downs and unpredictability of a relationship ; Lead single "Used To Love U", which references Whitney Bobby's relationship, is a powerful slice of RB/Hip-Hop/Gospel/Soul where John Legend soulfully sings about a rotten relationship and how he used to love a woman who was more concerned with her material possessions ; "She Don't Know" is an intriguing guitar ballad where John Legend tells the story of cheating on his main squeeze with another unfaithful woman (in other words, his sideline woman's also cheating on her respective partner) ; and Miri Ben-Ari shows listeners why she only needs a violin to prove her musical talent on the uplifting "Live It Up". What's most surprising, however, is the repentant RB/Hip-Hop ballad "I Can Change", where John Legend guest rapper / West Coat legend Snoop Dogg lace their lyrics and voices into an instrumental melange of guitar strings, piano keys and subtle horn bursts.br /br /Despite the album's strong points, it does have weaknesses. John Legend's gangster posturing is unconvincing on the lacklustre "Alright", and "Number One", despite a pleasing old-school groove and a jaw-dropping 16 bars from Kanye West, comes off as sleazy, especially when you consider the fact that it's about John Legend shamelessly trying to justify his cheating ways. Then there's "Lets Get Lifted Again", which is flat-out annoying on nearly every level. John Legend's reunion with his family on the personal, feel-good RB/Gospel/Soul song "It Don't Have To Change" is sweet and really has nothing unforgivably wrong about it. Unfortunately, it's hard to imagine a non-Christian/non-God-praising family singing or resonating with this song at anytime outside of Christmas. br /br /Other than those flaws, John Legend has provided a solid debut album. Lets hope his sophomore album, "Once Again", continues to deliver more music that equals or surpasses the quality of the material on this disc. 4 stars!br /5 Best Tracks:br /"Ordinary People"br /"I Can Change (feat. Snoop Dogg)"br /"Used To Love U"br /"She Don't Have To Know"br /"Live It Up (feat. Miri Ben-Ari)"br /br /Worst Tracks:br /"Lets Get Lifted"br /"Alright"br /"Number One (feat. Kanye West)"br /

5 out of 5 stars Simply Incredible   November 10, 2006
I waited until after the hype ended before purchasing this album and all I have to say is "Wow!". I haven't heard anything this good since the first time I played my older brother's 8-track of Earth, Wind Fire back in 1974. Legend is hip-hop's answer to Beck with his mixes.br /br /Definitely one of my top 100 albums of all time.

Kanye found a gem in this guy. Production is amazing, John is amazing, go get this cd now. John's whole style is great....and a breath of fresh air into the RB genre.

5 out of 5 stars I've listened to this CD more than any other.   September 22, 2006

John Legend's "Get Lifted" is the one CD I would listen to above all others (sorry, Madonna... it's a close call). And the new single, "Save Room," I just fell head over heels for. Something in my chest tightens when I listen to it. His voice is even smoother and sexier. I love the mellowness of his sound and a beat throughout it. Unlike what you see a lot in RB, he wouldn't "whine", he doesn't get carried away singing. His voice is very well controlled, he sings like a professional, not just to show off that he can.br /br /From "Get Lifted", my favorite songs are the first several on the album, the ones that have a beat.
