Better than Fairytopia, not as good as Princess the Pauper February 9, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Barbie plays Princess Annika, a headstrong teenager chafing under her overprotective parents. After a fight, she sneaks out of the castle and meets some new friends including Brietta, a Pegasus with a past, and Shiver, a polar bear cub, But she also meets Wenlock, an evil magician with plans of his own. When he casts a spell over the kingdom, it's up to Annika to build a magical wand of light and save her people.br /br /This movie is much better than Fairytopia. I was relieved to see that the film makers have gone back to the classical music and the more traditional story format that has made the Barbie movies such a hit. The animation is better and the story is easier for children to understand and follow. There are a few scenes with conflict, but the mood is lighter; consequently, it isn't as scary as Fairytopia.br /br /However, for all that, Pegasus still isn't as good as Princess the Pauper. Even though the animation is better, the story lacks some of the sparkle and charm found in PP. Additionally, some of the voice performances are too over-the-top and are annoying, Wenlock and the queen are especially grating. I know Shiver exists for comic relief, but I think the film would have been better without her - the animal sidekick idea has definitely run its course. The 3-D effects are a nice try, but could have used more work.br /br /Overall, it's a good (but not great) movie and children will like it. You won't regret adding it to your collection.

Another Barbie Favorite! January 21, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
We enjoy watching all of the Barbie movies, and this one was enjoyable as well. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is due to the shameless marketing in this movie. It was a bit too much "buy this" embedded in the movie. The others were not as blatant, in my opinion. As a result, we HAD to buy the Pegasus head and the dolls. Besides the marketing, the movie was fun to watch. After 50 repeats of it since Christmas, I am not tired of it ....yet!
Not a keeper January 18, 2006 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
The scenes are beautiful and the ice skating graceful. Other than that, it really isn't great for children. Rebellion, plural marriage and revenge do not comprise a children's movie in my opinion. My daughter runs out of the room and hides under my bed each time the villain appears. Needless to say, we will not be keeping it.br /br /It is our first Barbie movie, but it also doesn't always load in our brand new Philips DVD player. Wish I had rented it first.
Well worth owning January 16, 2006 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is firmly in the ballpark with the other Barbie films such as Nutcracker and Rapunzel. Don't bother with the 3-D effects, though--they aren't very good and will give you a headache.br /br /I feel this offering isn't quite up to the high standards set in Princess and the Pauper, for two reasons. One, the lack of great music that made Princess/Pauper such a delight. Two, the absence of Martin Short as the villain's voice. Short was absolutely splendid as the evil Preminger in Princess/Pauper, with all sorts of nice touches that made the movie fun to watch again and again (as you KNOW you will when your daughter puts it in the top spot on her frequent-play list).br /br /Still, it's a good story with often beautiful images. And it was nice, for a change, to have Barbie fall for a guy ("a fool called Aden") who wasn't born a prince. There must be hope for us commoners out there after all.
