MOOD MUSIC January 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
You need to be in a certain mood to like this CD, but I actually saw John Legend in concert, so that made it even better. Some songs are not that great, but if you are looking for a good CD to just chill out to, this is a good buy.
Someone Please Tell Me Where I've been? January 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
OK, So I have the tendency to pass judgement until heard. Like so MANY of us people tend to do. It took another person to make me see what a masterpiece this album was. In between another rendition from some very funny people I quite enjoyed this. In all honesty I had not picked up on John Legend simply from his single that I had heard previously br / "Ordinary People" The track did not move me and I simply left him at the status of another piano player with a neo/soul track. But " Again", maybe its because of the relevance to my life but this brother has amazing if not an astonishing ability to write. I now commend him and this album. I now must return to listening.br /
Sophomore Year Is Not Nearly As Fun As Freshman Year December 30, 2007 John Legend exploded into music in 2004 with his RB standard Ordinary People and his different debut. He definitely brought something different to the doldrums of music. Selling almost 2 million copies and becoming an RB staple, his debut was an unparalleled RB masterpiece, at least for me. Now, 2 years later, John returns with his sophomore effort, Once Again. This CD is definitely different from his debut. For starters, John doesn't sing as hard as he did on the debut. Plus, the music is more retro, 70s, even Rockish. There's a peculiar sound to the music. So, those who are expecting a Get Lifted Part II or something that sounds remotely similar to the John Legend we got on his debut, look elsewhere. This has taken me some getting used to, and while I'm slightly used to it, I still have not been able to fully accept John's new musical direction after such a great debut.br /br /Save Room--First single, produced by Will.i.am and John Legend, this 70s sounding, Retro (remember the theme of the CD) sounds sorta Austin Powerish, and while I was taken off guard upon my first few listens, the song grew on me and became one of my favorite singles of 2006. While the songs didn't make any significant gains on radio, it still introduced the public to John's different direction. Abr /br /Heaven--Produced by Kanye West and John Legend, this 70s soulful song is really tight. While it doesn't sound like Stay With you from his debut, it has similar elements, and this has to be my favorite song on the CD. I'm disappointed that it didn't have any chart success. It's a nice mid-tempo to groove to with some nice lyrics, nice background vocals and a good feel to it. A+br /br /Stereo--Produced by Devo Springsteen and Tom Craskey, this mid-tempo is really weird to me. It's hard for me to get into this. The theme of the song makes a connection to a stereo with his girl only loving her stereo. It's interesting, but the vocals are too subdued, the weird instrument playing in the background the programmed, repetitive drums don't work for me. C+br /br /Show Me--Produced by Raphael Saadiq and Jake The Phatman, this slow jam tackles a deep topic about God showing or giving a sign. It's a thought that many have, and the way that the song is arranged in a laidback manner with some subdued vocals. It's a great song...different for John, but it works. B+br /br /Each Day Gets Better--Produced by Will.i.am and John, this nice mid-tempo uses a sample from a '70s soul song that I like a lot--In These Changing Times performed by the Four Tops, it's a cool, breezy, old school, jammin' song with some solid lead vocals, nice background vocal arrangements and a strong instrumentation track to get one moving. A-br /br /P.D.A. (We Just Don't Care)--Produced by Eric Hudson and Jack Splash and Craig Street and John himself, this hand-clapping mid-tempo talks about those public displays of affection. It was John's 3rd single, which didn't fare as well as the 2 preceding singles. It's a nice follow-up to the previous song, and it has a nice, spring, breezy feel to it. Bbr /br /Slow Dance--Produced by Will.i.am and John Legend, this mid-tempo follows nicely after the other 2. It sounds like it contains elements of He Can Only Hold Her, which appears on Amy Winehouse's Back to Black. This song is a nice song to get into the mood for having an intimate dance symbolizing love. It definitely has that 70s feel to it. The background is good. The breakdown in the song is also strong. B+br /br /Again--Produced by Craig Street and John, this ballad, which was a small hit single on RB, some are confused about what he's talking about in this song. It sounds as if it's an affair. The arrangement of the song and John's vocals fit this song well, and it's one of my favorites on the CD. Abr /br /Maxine--Produced by Sa-Ra and John Legend, this ballroom, 70s song has to go. It doesn't sound good to me at all. It sounds like bad elevator music. The concept is cool, but the package in which it comes in is not. Dbr /br /Where Did My Baby Go--Produced by Craig Street and John Legend, this slow burner is way better than Maxine and the sparse piano arrangement and John's pleading vocals help the song, but it doesn't do anything for me. B-br /br /Another Again--Produced by Ken Lewis and John Legend, this is the follow-up to Again, and it is one of the strongest cuts on the CD. It is in the same vein as Live It Up from his debut. It's a strong song with the 70s vibe but updated to fit John's style. Abr /br /Coming Home--Produced by Will.i.am and John Legend, a slow song with some lyrical depth to it. It's a great closer, and this song and the previous one gives hope that his next effort is going to be just as good as if not better than his debut and this CD. A-br /br /Overall, the CD is ok. If this were John's debut, and we never heard his debut, then this would be a strong, somewhat groundbreaking debut effort from a unique artist. However, because with his debut he was able to blend neo-soul with contemporary RB with classic Soul with tinges of Gospel and Hip-Hop so seamlessly, it was a strong CD. This just seems like he's trying to cross over and appeal to folks in their 30's and who are middle-to-upper class. It's a good CD, but it doesn't compare to his debut.
Excelente voz December 21, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful

A More Mature Legend November 18, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
While I am a fan of the first album, Once Again has a more adult, rich, emotional, and subtly sexy (the best kind of sexy in my book) feel to it that I love. br /br /Artists seem to get slammed if they sound too much like their first album, and slammed if they don't sound enough like it. Happily, Legend appears to be comfortable and confident with his artistic abilities and the direction he chooses to take them. He is true to his craft and will not be tied down to one sound - and now was definitely the time to make that known. br /br /Once Again is an album to be enjoyed alone, with family or friends of all ages, and for any mood you may be in. Those who prefer the hip-hop flavor he had last time around may not enjoy it as much; but for those who enjoy sultry vocal storytelling set to flawless arrangements, you will be 'jazzed' for Once Again.br /br /Personal Favorites:br /br /COMING HOMEbr /ANOTHER AGAINbr /SAVE ROOMbr /EACH DAY GETS BETTERbr /P.D.A.br /HEAVENbr /br /I cannot wait to see what this modern day musical genius has in store next.br /br /
