"Old School" Yeah Right June 21, 2007 3 out of 8 found this review helpful
John legend first cd "Get lifted" was a joy to listen to. His second cd "Once again" is "Once is enough already"!. He sounds straned and annoying. The lyrics are not well written, more like very immature. He tries way to hard and you can hear it in his voice. These RB acts are losing a lot of fans by making stupid music like this and expect us to "Like this crap". All they care about is getting paid. If you want to hear real RB with raw lyrics listen to Amy winehouse or Corinne Bailey Rae. The difference between RB Brits and american fake RB, they sing with emotion, write meaningful lyrics and have great Vocals. American RB is only in it for our cash and make awful music with no substance. As long as we keep buying music like this. They will continue to make trashy music like this.
Fabulous!!! May 16, 2007 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
Very different from his first album, but still exceptional. I think it's a definite suprise for JL fans, but truly enjoyable. Favourite is Another Again!!!
Terrific CD, can't stop listening to it! May 6, 2007 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I bought this for the "Save Room" single, it fast became a staple in the car selection, just a great CD with lots of RB influences and good vibes.
A gutsy personal mid-tempo release that scores big! May 6, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
There are so many acoustic retro/neo-retro singers in the market and there is another group mining the hits of the past to try and stay alive in a changing market-place. br /br /John Legend is an original who happens to have a voice that is beyond reminiscent of Sam Cooke, one of the best singers ever to breathe. Instead of running away from the similarities, but has avoided the dreaded sophomore jinx by releasing a collection of songs that sound like a million bucks and already sound timeless. In the hands of a lesser singer, this mostly mid-tempo collection would sound repetitive and derivative. In John's hands, the release sounds so lush, and collectively represent a celebration of introspective lyrics and of people in general.br /br /I buy a lot of music (should probably go to therapy to find out why ;-) and most of it sounds so blah, lacking inspiration. That is not the case here. I am listening to the release right now and I like it more and more every time I listen to it.br /br /Warning: If you don't like mid-tempo/slow songs and find Sam Cooke to be a bore or never heard of him, do some research as this may not be for you. I also like/love artists like Lenny Kravitz and Mary J. Blige, but don't buy this looking for the type of emotional release generated by Lenny or Mary, John is more about smooth old school elegance and a singing style that is soulful but controlled. This is a CD that even your parents/grandparents will like. Scary but it's just that transcedant.br /br /I love every song, but the first song is a classic. Although the lyrics talk of a cold day, I envision the beach, friends, endless fun, and maybe running into a person who will change your life as you are going to get a cold refreshment ;-)
