Play That Funky Music, White Boy March 20, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
For me, Elliott Yamin's first CD has been one of the most highly anticipated releases of the past year. Like countless others, I was deeply disappointed that this smooth, soulful vocalist lost the Season 5 American Idol competition and the wait for this CD has seemed endless. So the question is: was it worth the wait? In a word, YES!br /br /That being said, I don't think it's perfect, but it sure is good and it easily fits my criteria of being a very good CD (that criteria being that I like over half the songs on any particular album). Yamin's CD starts out strong with the dance-friendly "Movin' On". The song has a great beat, a jazzy style, and of course, topnotch vocals. I loved the next number, "Wait for You", a soulful ballad that nicely shows off Elliott's versatility with a fairly tricky set of lyrics. There's a bit of a lull with the next two tracks because while they're pleasant enough, I didn't warm up to them as quickly. But then Elliott's beautiful voice wraps itself around 'You Are the One' and I'm mesmerized again. Oh, how this man can sing! Other standout tracks include 'I'm the Man,' 'Take My Breath Away' and 'Alright' [terrific vocal style there].br /br /In a nutshell, this is a good, solid CD with a fair number of songs that could be hits in their own right. Yamin shows a shrewdness in song selection and a versatility and strength in his singing that makes me confident that this is one 'funky white boy' who'll be in the spotlight for a long time to come.br /br /As a side note, sorry for posting yet another version of this review [though I doubt if too many people will read it since it won't be a Spotlight and is going to go way to the back of the line] but Amazon wouldn't let me change the rating unless I deleted it first and then reposted. After checking my older reviews, I thought it would be bizarre to rate a CD with a five-star review if I truly only liked a little more than half the songs. But it's still a solid 4-star CD in my book and I wanted the rating to honestly reflect what I feel. br /br /
Just what I expected from Elliott March 20, 2007 13 out of 17 found this review helpful
This is just the type of album I expected Elliott to come out with, a HIT. I love this CD, it shows all of the Elliott that we love. I can't wait til the next one.
WOW!!!!! March 20, 2007 15 out of 19 found this review helpful
This is an outstanding cd from one of the best new talents around. How he ever came in third on AI is beyond me. What a voice, soulful and passionate! He certainly puts his heart out there for us all to hear. And, what a heart it is. There's not a bad song on the cd. Personal favorite at the moment is "You Are The One". He's definitely here to stay. I'm thrilled for Elliott. This cd is a gem!!!!
Elliott shines with soulful brilliance on this debut album! March 20, 2007 26 out of 29 found this review helpful
What an amazing debut album! Every track shows off Elliott's rich, powerful voice that's dripping with soul and emotion. This is one former American Idol contestant who will not disappoint his fans, because on this CD he stays true to himself. Every week on American Idol, Elliott chose songs that best represented him, whether or not they were well-known or "safe" - in other words, likely to get him votes. On this album, Elliott continues to shows that he knows who he is and will not compromise his integrity by churning out over-produced, lackluster songs that sound like everything else that's out there. He truly means it when he declares with conviction, "I'm the man who holds my ground," on the tender ballad "I'm The Man." br /br /There is great diversity among the tracks on this album - from contemporary RB ("Wait For You," "One Word") to old-school soul ("Train Wreck," "Take My Breath Away") to gospel and jazz influences ("Find A Way," "Free"). At the same time, Elliott infuses his signature soulfulness into every track, which makes the album cohesive and not just a random collection of songs. He truly shines no matter what style of song he sings, and his powerhouse vocals are at their best on every track. His voice effortlessly conveys both tenderness and passion, and both are prominently featured on this album, especially on his masterful cover of "A Song For You," a song that he delivered in a showstopping performance that won him many fans on American Idol last year. br /br /This album should interest not only fans of American Idol - it should appeal to lovers of quality music in general. Elliott's voice penetrates br /straight to the heart, and this album is surely just the beginning of an amazing career.
