Styx live December 21, 2007 5 out of 10 found this review helpful
Having bought the original live album way back in '83, there is now a "companion" dvd. Judging by the cd and the dvd both are slightly differentbr /as i believe they were promoting the "Kilroy" album, not a classic frombr /a Styx fan, you can almost feel that "bad times" were just around the corner. With the dvd you get to see "Cold War", "Heavy Metal Posioning"br /"Renegade" along with the other 11 tracks, but surprisingly we havebr /"Fooling Yorself"{Angry Young Man} and two all time classics tracks that are on the cd but didn't make the dvd, i wonder why? "Suite Madame Blue"br /and "Crystal Ball". Hmmmm
Now this is Classic Styx December 18, 2007 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Originally released years ago on VHS, this release finally sees light on DVD. This is classic era Styx, the video and show are a bit dated, but the sound is incredible, this release makes this the essential Styx DVD concert purchase. The set list is heavy on the Kilroy material, which the band is promoting and touring behind, and you are in for a treat to hear Cold War, Haven't We Been Here Before and Heavy Metal Poisoning (even with all the cheesy stage antics / show). Also included are pretty much all the band's promo videos from the late 70's and early 80's. The Kilroy videos are cheesy, but classic and a hoot to watch. If I can make a small complaint, I would have liked to seen them include some more live footage of the band performing Crystal Ball, or Suite Madam Blue...I only say this because DVD track listing differs from the cd release track listing. Otherwise this is a great DVD to buy on what is included.
Here it is December 11, 2007 26 out of 26 found this review helpful
Well, It's finally out. It's about time. I actually never thought this would ever be released on DVD. The concert itself was a fun show for it's time and any serious Styx fan should pick this up. The video looks pretty good although it just looks like it was just a simple transfer. No remastering or anything. The audio has been remastered in 5.1 as well as 2.0 stereo. Both sound pretty good but nothing that's gonna blow anybody away. The treat on this DVD, however, are the videos! Included on this DVD are 12 music videos from '77 to '84.br /br /The Videos are:br /1. Come Sail Away (1977 Promo video)br /2. Borrowed Time (1979 Promo video)br /3. Babae (1979 Promo video)br /4. Boat On The River (1979 Promo video)br /5. A.D. 1928 / Rockin' The Paradise (Music Video)br /6. The Best Of Times (Music Video)br /7. Too Much Time On My Hands (Music Video)br /8. Mr. Roboto (Music Video)br /9. Don't Let It End (Music Video)br /10. Heavy Metal Poisoning (Music Video)br /11. Haven't We Been Here Before? (Music Video)br /12. Music Time (Music Video)br /br /Most of these videos have never been released before so it's nice to have them included here. The only thing that would have made it better would be if they included the later videos from Edge of the Century as well. It's still a pretty good DVD for the price.
Incredible music but a little camp. December 9, 2007 5 out of 12 found this review helpful
STYX would never be the same again, for better and for worse. The album and subsequent tour for KILROY WAS HERE destroyed the band and forever the individual players would never find that magic again. Truly, STYX, had seen their BEST OF TIMES.br /br /This live release is both a testament to the immense talent of the band and a novella of the ruination of everything that was good about Tommy, Dennis, Chuck, John and James. While Tommy has since gone on to much acclaim and varied success, Dennis has forever left classic/ art rock behind in favor of pop and show tunes. J.Y. and the rest of the band waited for the band to reunite and once again live the carnival ride that was STYX in the late 1970's.br /br /While the band did reunite for immensely successful (and musically brilliant) tours in 1996 and 1997, by the end of 1996 the same chasms ensued and ultimately ended once and for all any hjope of bringing back such wonderful artistic collective.br /br /Bringing fans back to CAUGHT IN THE ACT: LIVE.br /br /If one listens closely, the despair and sorrow of a desintegrated band can be heard. While the band gave the music every ounce of energy it had within, the individual tanks were relatively low on fuel. br /br /With that being said, the music is often amazing. However, the stage setting and the role-playing of parts is laborious, bordering on insulting. Furthermore, some songs from the accompanying album release are omitted from the video release while others (more closely following the loose theme of KILROY WAS HERE) are available on the DVD. br /br /One can only hope that among the bonus material for CAUGHT IN THE ACT: LIVE - DVD will be the installment of classic songs such as CRYSTAL BALL, while ommitting none of the original release tracks. br /br /If CRYSTAL BALL and others are added to this final video release, then my rating would be an unequivocal 5 stars, but without such (and with the silliness of the KILROY WAS HERE stage production) I am left giving this only 4 stars based solely on the merits of the musicianship of this once majestic quintet.br /br /For my money, while this is truly a remarkable archive of all that was once good and once bad with the band known as STYX, I would rather recommend both RETURN TO PARADISE and ONE WITH EVERYTHING as vastly superior concert performances.br /br /I, for one, can wait with nothing short of anxiety for CAUGHT IN THE ACT:LIVE to finally arrive at my doorstep and make its way into my DVD plauyer. br /br /STYX, truly one of the most amazing bands in the annuls of rock and roll.br /br /
