One of the best mini-series I ever seen! August 19, 2006 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I miss all the good fantasy mini-series NBC used to have on. Merlin, The 10th Kingdom, Gulliver's Travels and even their update of Alice in Wonderland were good tv. Here the under-rated Sam Neil gives one of his best performances as Merlin. He gives a fun and believeable magical performance. When the rest of the cast is top-notch. You have Rutger Hauer "also under-rated" as an evil king. Miranda Richardson excellent as the evil Mab "she's not nearly as good in the second movie". She also plays the Lady in the Water who is good here but bad in the second film and Merlin acts like he never even met her in the second film. br /br / You also have Martin Short giving a magical performance as an ugly elf type creature named Frik that works with Mab but has a good heart. Isabella Rossellini plays Merlins love interest named Nimue who gets her face scarred by a dragon. While Helen Bohen Carter plays a girl with a lazy eye that Frik makes pretty and return she has to have Arthur's child. Who of course becomes Mordred who's to become a threat to Arthur later on in life. br /br / Merlin offers better fantasy and better effects than the disapointing sequel. It also has the excellent cast that I just mentioned. Plus this one is also better because it surrounds the story arround Neil who is excellent as Merlin. Part 2 gets even worse when he's not around. Part 2 probably would've been better if it was on NBC and had the budget that the first one had. If you didn't enjoy this mini-series then I suggest you watch Merlin's Apprentice. Not because it's better but because it might even make you appreciate this one a lot more.
Could have been better. June 27, 2006 4 out of 14 found this review helpful
Entertaining movie if you overlook the flaws. Special effects are a bit cheezy, Queen Mab's hoarse voice becomes tiring, some stilted dialogue from others, but Sam Neill does excellent work of coarse. br /br /What about Uther's wake? Did anyone notice that his body almost falls off the table when one leg of the table partially collapses? The actors go on just as if nothing happens. I thought someone would adlib, "Look a sign from the gods, Uther's lineage is rejected and Arthur should be king". At the very least, the director should have reshot the scene. br /

Of all of Hallmark's made for TV movies, I consider this as one of the best. Coming in at 3 hours in length, the movie tells the tale of Merlin and other characters of medieval England. The story starts with Merlin's literal and figurative conception within the mind of Queen Mab, and ends with him retiring from magic with his love Nimue. In between, we see the lives and deaths of King Arthur, Morgan le Fay, Mordred, Lord Vortigan and a host of other regal and not-so-regal characters. br /br /This made for TV movie is impressive in numerous counts. First, the music is good but not overbearing. It complements the onscreen action and dialogue quite well. Second, the cinematography is beautiful, and captures the beauty of the English and Welsh countryside; remember, the Arthur legend is based in Wales. br /br /Third, the dialogue is spot on. No snappy one-liners or overlong soliloquoys. Instead, the dialogue is realistic and true to real emotions that real people undergo. Fourth, the action scenes are quite realistic. The heroes do get killed in battle. Battle scenes are chaotic, and most importantly, war is a strenous exercise of human bodies. This is probably the only action movie I have seen where soldiers in combat actually pant for breath and heave their chests for air under the burden of heavy armor. Bravo for the realism. Fifth, the romance scenes are magical and beautiful but are not cheesy and do not show too much suckface. Last, the story is built around relationships, and shows the intricacies involved when humans of various goals, ethics, beliefs and backgrounds are forced to deal with one another in relationships that can alternate between adversarial to friendly.br /br /Overall, a great movie appropriate for everyone. It is in the same lines as Lord of the Rings, Willow, etc...

I do not have a proper review for this movie. It was a gift for a friend. She was extremely happy to receive it.
This movie... March 12, 2006 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Was spectacular. Never before have I seen such a fabulously fabricated tale, with a veritable cornucopia of talent. I could find few faults with this at all. I recommend having a bowl of popcorn and maybe a box of tissues handy for the more melancholy scenes.
