A classic for 70's Disney fans gets the deluxe treatment. October 2, 2006 When Disney's gold classic edition DVD of "Robin Hood" came out a few years ago I was very disappointed with the transfer. Disney just quickly ported over the VHS version straight to DVD - from a less from pristine print in monophonic sound. Besides the original trailer there was precious little extra for animation fans.br /br /While Disney's 1973 version of "Robin Hood" is far from their best animated film, over the years this movie has gained legendary status with anthropomorphic art fans. Because "Robin Hood" was the first animated film from a major studio with an all-animal cast playing roles usually reserved for human characters, it holds a unique place in animation history.br /br /Disney's "Robin Hood" has left a huge influence in furry art, comics, Japanese manga, anime, video games (Nintendo's "StarFox"), and later animated classics such as Don Bluth's "Secret Of NIMH" and Disney's own "Lion King". Many furry fans fondly remember seeing this movie in the theater in 1973-4 or 1982 when it was re-released, or when it ran many times on the Disney Channel in the 80's and 90's.br /br /The new DVD transfer is beautiful - little details in the colors, the animation and especially the backgrounds that looked washed out on the old "Gold Classic Collection" DVD are now sharp and clear. But the movie has been cropped from a 1.37:1 aspect ratio to a 1.75:1 aspect ratio to make it work best for widescreen TV's. Luckily Disney did a good job of cropping it. (No crowns, caps or foreheads were chopped off in the process!) Still I wish a fullscreen version of this new transfer would have been included to keep die-hard animation freaks happy.br /br /The sound quality is also a big improvement in the clarity of voices, music and sound effects. But like the "Aristocrats" DVD, parts of the orchestral backing track have been mixed into "fake" stereo for some scenes. I guess only mono tapes of these backing tracks exist in the Disney vaults with no multi-track tapes to remix from.br /br /The bonus features are again hit and miss - IMO the alternate ending would have made this a better movie with critics and adult fans. Some might say it was a little too dark or slow moving for children. Sadly it was never fully animated and is only presented in storyboard form in rough drawings. It is worth watching. The gallery is also fascinating just to view the early forms of the characters and other curios. I wish it was longer, but I can't stand the child narrator. I suggest using the still gallery view for this. Other extras are strictly for the kids again. From the skimpy features I get the feeling there isn't much left, or Disney didn't want to spend more time money to dig further into the vaults.br /br /Is the new DVD worth buying? Yes if you love the film and have a quality widescreen TV or home theater setup just to see this gorgeous transfer that finally does the film justice. If you already own the original DVD or VHS and only have a small screen TV you might want to rent it or buy it when it's discounted.
This gets a special edition?! September 17, 2006 6 out of 50 found this review helpful
I know I will not be the only who sees Robin Hood as one of the most artistically poor of all of Disney's animated features, unfortunately, people think of this kind of animation when they think of '70s Disney and forget that the Disney seventies were so much superior to this.br /br /Robin Hood is weak in story-line, characters and specially artistry and yet, it seems to have a rating of 7.3 at IMDb and a high rating here, too, I guess that's the reason for the special edition because there are many other more deserving Disney films out there (The Sword in the Stone, or The Rescuers to name a few, you know the *real* Disney masterpiece films?) and Robin Hood isn't even close. Sure, it's entertaining, but the DVD release it got once was enough to satisfy it, I personally can't see the film improving with a digital restoration.br /br /Still, before saying anything else, I'll wait until the Special Edition is out and then we'll see, but so far, this film gets a 2/5.
Robin Hood Rocks! September 11, 2006 9 out of 30 found this review helpful
Ha Ha Ha....I'm the first person to review this!br /br /I love this movie! It has a new alternate ending and adds a lot of special features onto the old gold version of the film. The new film is also shot in a widescreen format. I'm sure that it will make a good movie even better!br /br /I still can't believe that I'm the first to rate this!
Clever Cartoon Version of the Classic September 10, 2006 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
There have been dozens of movies and television shows that capitalize on the legend of Robin Hood. This version is clever and funny, and the music of country music legend Roger Miller makes this movie one for everyone to watch.br /br /Everyone knows the tale of Robin Hood. Forced to be an outlaw, though always loyal to King Richard, Robin Hood fought against the usurper Prince John. Robin Hood sheltered and protected poor people and redistributed wealth from the rich to the needy poor. Robin Hood performed these deeds from his base in Sherwood Forest.br /br /Though we have seen this movie with many different great actors, this version has excellent comedy and very good animation. Robin Hood is appropriately swashbuckling and handsome, and Maid Marian is beautiful; both characters are drawn as foxes. In fact, all the characters in this movie are animals, as Alan-A-Dale points out at the beginning of the movie.br /br /This film has its share of great actors. Englishman Brian Bedford provides a perfect voice for Robin. Monica Evans, who also appeared in "The Odd Couple," voices Maid Marian. The role of Maid Marian was the last for Monica Evans. The incomparable Peter Ustinov ("Quo Vadis," "Blackbeard's Ghost") voices both Prince John and King Richard. Terry Thomas ("Tom Thumb," "The Abominable Dr. Phibes") is the voice of Sir Hiss. Roger Miller is the minstrel Alan-A-Dale. Miller also provided the songs for this movie. Andy Devine (who had more than 180 movie and television appearances dating back to the 1920's) voices Friar Tuck. Pat Buttram ("The Rescuers," "Back to the Future III") voices the Sheriff of Nottingham and George Lindsey ("The Rescuers," "The Andy Griffith Show") voices Trigger.br /br /This movie is fun to watch again and again, and is a favorite of children of all ages. I recommend this movie to anyone looking for a pleasant story to watch, and to anyone with young children.br /br /Enjoy!br /
