Still enjoyable after all these years... January 10, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
First, I have to admit I have been a fan of Disney's original animations for years. I owned videos/DVD's of most of the early features. When I saw that Robin Hood was coming out, I preordered. Here's why: Roger Miller, Phil Harris, Peter Ustinov and the myriad of voices long since lost; the lyrics of Johnny Mercer for "Phony King" (Savannah's own!) are great. While the voices of Robin and Marian are not as familiar (at least not to me) they capture the `humanity' of the foxes. br /I saw this film in the theater when it originally came out. I had already purchased the video but I got the DVD for the extra features and the restoration. Even on my old TV the picture is clear and the colors bright. I just wish I had a better sound system with which to enjoy the music. br /I viewed the alternative ending as well. Somehow, I think it would have been more interesting had it been used. It really showed King John (Mommy!) for what he really is.br /All in all, I was not disappointed.br /
A Great Disney Film January 3, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
A sweet movie fit for people young and old! There are three reasons I love this movie.br /First: The animation is AWESOME! The characters all have funny expressions when they're supposed to.br /Second: The story is great and easy for all youngsters to understand.br /Third: This movie is HILARIOUS! I LOVE it when Prince John hits Sir Hiss with a small wooden plank! Also Recommended: Fox and the Hound 2, Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Wars Episode 3, and Barnyard the Movie.
A Good Transfer of a Good Film December 19, 2006 17 out of 19 found this review helpful
Firstly, those who have complained about the aspect ratio are partially correct. This film was drawn in 4:3 BUT it was shown in widescreen when it was exhibited to the public upon its initial release. While it is true that some of the material is missing primarily from the top of the cell, the film was drawn so that that area could be missed. I must give credit to Disney for delving into their own history and discovering how each film was exhibited. Take a look at the recent reissue of The Fox and the Hound to prove this point. They could have cropped that film into widescreen but did not because it was shown in 4:3 originally. br /br /As to the transfer, it is quite good and much improved over the Gold Collection release. The colors are crisper and there are less artifacts that can be seen. br /br /I must admit that I enjoy Disney's Robin Hood quite a bit. It's not the best film in the Disney stable but it is enjoyable and has its charms. Roger Miller's music adds a nice touch and gives this English tale a bit of an infusion of Southern and Western charm (Western charm is also added by Andy Devine and Pat Buttram - two men associated with the old westerns). This, combined with the use of animals in all roles, makes Disney's Robin Hood a unique twist on the tale and one of the more enjoyable films. It may be Disney's best animated feature to be released in the 1970s, a decade that was Disney's worst for animation as the company was trying to find itself after Walt's death. br /br /There's one notable complaint in the reviews here about the ending, a take I have to disagree with. This DVD does provide what the alternate ending would have been and, frankly, the way it ends as is is superior. We don't merely hear the rooster tell us how the tale ends; we see Prince John, the Sheriff of Nottingham, and Sir Hiss all working the quarry as prisoner while Good King Richard waves farewell to the newly married Marian and Robin. The ending works quite well for the film and leaves Richard's return to our imagination. It works well in how the movie is envision with a minstrel telling us the story.br /br /The Extras on this DVD are a bit disappointing. I'm not much into the games nor do I care for the sing-a-longs. Kids will get a kick out of both. What I would have loved to have included would be a documentary detailing the making of Robin Hood. This was the first film that was greenlighted after Walt Disney's death. It'd be interesting to hear about how everyone at the studios handled this feature and approached it. After all, Robin Hood was the film that made or broke Disney after Walt's death. It was a success and we continued to get Disney features, but I'm sure the stress of putting this film together was enormous.br /br /The movie is well worth the price, especially if you love Disney films as I do. The extras are disappointing but that goes for all copies of Robin Hood right now. This one is a worthwhile purchase.
awesome December 10, 2006 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
I thought the Robin Hood character was really cute and whoever illustrated it was really good. It's been one of my favorite movies since childhood. I loved the part where the snake sounds like Pooh bear and I really love the king how he is so greedy of money and then Robin Hood finds a way to stop him. I forget how because I haven't watched the movie in a long time.br /signed Ian
dared to hope but hopes for cd soundtrack of this film dashed December 8, 2006 0 out of 8 found this review helpful
When I saw that they were rereleasing this film I preordered right away br /br /for the dvd. Than I looked for the cd soundtrack and was amazed that theybr /br /didn't bother to make a cd for release at the same time. What's the dealbr /br /with that. Disney has some wonderfull old films like this one with the br /br /only way to listen to the music is records. Who has a record player now abr /br /days? Hardly anybody. And where can you find records? Only a few places br /br /on the internet. Stop redoing versions of current films adding one song br /br /here or there to sell the cd and start preserving the magic that was br /br /never released on cd, or indiviual cd.br /br /I would love a cd with all these songs and only these songs. I'm surebr /br /I'm not alone in that. Now and than I still search hoping for the cd of br /br /these songs, please make it available so one day I can enjoy the thrill ofbr /br /victory in finding it after a long search with no results.
