Don't Even Bother February 26, 2008 1 out of 18 found this review helpful
Scientist Robert Neville (Charlton Heston) is the last man on earth after a reaction from a vaccine left the world's population dead. A few survivors have mutated into a group called "The Family." These people despise the last living man of the human race and blame him for the massive outbreak which left them unable to function in sunlight.br /br /This film is absolutely silly with very little resemblance to the modern remake I am Legend. Here Neville tools around in random convertibles he finds along the roads of the city by day, weilding an automatic rifle at all times. He likes to shoot, but not really at anything in particular. He also enjoys walking around shirtless and berating inanimate objects. The concept of "The Family" is frightening in theory, but in application, the group resembles a cult of Jawas from Star Wars. The death scenes in the beginning are far from chilling. In fact, the twisted looks on the faces of the dead and dying humans are laughable and ridiculous. br /br /Fans of I am Legend might find themselves interested in this film to compare the two, but there really is no comparison. The remake is action packed, thought provoking, and emotional. The Omega Man should be taken as seriously as an episode of Walker Texas Ranger.
HESTON DOES WHAT HE CAN IN THIS DATED BUT, GREAT CLASSIC! February 26, 2008 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
I saw this film at age 9 in the theater and it was too cool to believe! Viewing it now it does seem a bit dated and it reeks of that whole "70's thing" It also has a TV movie feel to it when it comes to the stunts and some of the cast. Heston is well......"Heston"! and he can pretty much make anything work when it comes to these sci-fi flicks. I personally like this better than 'The Last Man On Earth' but, it's a matter of opinion. I thought Heston had a better fortress to keep the creature out and the creatures were more of a threat in this film. There is also more action and some funny 70's jive to laugh at! The DVD transfer is very good and there are some extras but, nothing special.
A great version of The Last Man on Earth February 11, 2008 "Omega Man" is the remake of "The Last Man on Earth" (also a great film). The story in Omega Man is more developed than in The Last Man on Earth, the effects are better, the background story is better. But, in the end, they are all just as great. Of course, there is also "I Am Legend" (the 2007 remake of this one). The story on all these 3 movies is great, and so is the acting. Highly recommend it.br /br /There are some variations in the three films. The 1964 of The Last Man on Earth with Vincent Price, has all that this movie lacks. Price plays a more convincing and tortured character; Heston is not. I Am Legend is better in the special effect department, as well as Will Smith's performance. The "creatures" in The Last Man on Earth" are a mix between zombies and vampires; in "The Omega Man" they are just homicidal maniacs with delusions of grandeur that are sensitive to light and have lost all pigmentation. The creatures in "I am legend" are more like sub-human agile creatures. br /br /These three movies are based on I Am Legend by Richard Matheson. There are many subtle and non-subtle differences in all three versions and I everyone should watch them all.
original omega man beats i-legand hands down February 8, 2008 nothing beats the original realistic end of the world epic like the original...will smith is always the fresh prince with some special effects he makes a fair remake with no credit given back to original, but thats hollywood fresh out of talent and new ideas...heston battles in the classic is worth seeing
The Omega Man February 8, 2008 The story of "The Omega Man," starring Charlton Heston is 5 stars as far as I am concerned. The picture quality of the DVD, however, made me give it only 3 stars. The picture, a lot of the time is so dark, it's hard to see what is going on. It really takes away from the story.
