Rollercoaster, of love? November 12, 2008 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
This book took me on quite a ride. br /br / The prologue read like a high school creative writing assignment, with prose like, "and he moved with the subtle certainty that comes from knowing many things."br /br / The first chapter, thankfully, moved into the story itself without too much more flowery preamble, and away I went.br /br / The story begins as typical fantasy, something is wrong in the world and we don't know what or why. We're given glimpses of the evil machinations, and as such provides adequate incentive to keep turning the pages.br /br / As events unfold, we discover that the whole purpose of our second main character was to provide a reason for the first main character to tell the story of his life. At this point, I felt my skepticism struggling to break free again, but I calmed it and continued.br /br / When parents are killed by dark forces and the sole surviving prodigy son vows revenge, well, we've certainly been here before but at this point I felt I had developed what I think was the proper approach to this book. That is, as one would approach one of those run of the mill action movies.br /br / Once in this mindset, the book was actually quite enjoyable. Yeah, the main character was some kind of superhero with his unsurpassed intellect and aptitude for everything. Yeah, his love interest was this 'free spirit' that would make the most obnoxious decisions at every turn. And yeah, the rest of the supporting cast is reminiscent of Harry Potter.br /br / Despite all that, by approaching the book the way I did, I was able to really enjoy it. It was entertainment and a 'fun' story. It takes no risks and brings nothing new to the table but still remained enjoyable.br /br / I must make one formal complaint though, when you set the stage the way this author chose -- dumping us into a world with talk of looming danger -- there is a certain implied agreement made between the author and the reader. It is this: when the end comes, we will feel more informed about the world we were introduced to. Not completely informed, but enough to feel like we're a part of it and have some stake in its future.br /br / In this, the book fails miserably. In fact, you learn nearly nothing about the little spider thing that is presented as the first conflict in the book by the end.br /br / All in all, this book is a giant prologue to a greater story that we have yet to be made privy to, and I think that while the author will lose a lot of readers who were looking for greatness, he will still retain the readers that read for a simple escape from reality. By virtue of this, he will be likely be given a chance to bring the story into fruition, hopefully before readers lose patience with him.
O please let the story start or end!!! November 12, 2008 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
I think that the book has its merits, but they are lost on with a onslaught of words. I understand charter building, but this book just goes on and on and on. Save your time and buy the First law series. Although if you like a meandering book, go for it.
It's really good November 10, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I liked this book a lot. It was original, compelling, and very well-written (with the exception of a couple typos). I didn't want to leave off reading it. If you like fantasy, this is a breath of fresh air. There aren't any ideas ripped off from other books and tweaked; rather it is the story of a young man who seems to be a genius, though not wise as much as smart. There are a few demons, forces of evil, etc but we aren't wallowing in it as much as in other books. Rather it's a character study, and a very good one. It has an interesting structure, being a first-person story interrupted with brief interludes that take us out of the story and show us the storyteller in the present time, in third-person point-of-view. I can't wait to continue Kvothe's (good name!) saga in the next book!
Compelling November 8, 2008 I really liked this book!! Most of the book was presented as a flashback, with interludes in the "present." I found that Kvothe was very arrogant, but that that arrogance got him into and out of troubles beyond the imagination of a more humble person. That arrogance in the main narrative and the contrasting humility that Kvothe displays in the "present" adds a forboding shadow to the book. br /My main gripe with the book was that you could see him walk into bad situations and make poor choices. If you get money from a notorious loan shark, you pay her back first! You may be distilled awesome, but a little humility in front of the local nobility won't hurt you. I suppose that is supposed to drive the conflict, but I have troubles with it. br /I would recommend and have recommended this book to anyone into the fantasy genre.
Wonderful November 3, 2008 Wonderfully written story! Original fantasy and storytelling at its best. Not the traditional approach to magic and swordplay. The main character in this story is systematically built, experience by experience. The hardships of life creating what looks to be a very weathered hero whose conscience more often than not motivates him to be a victim of circumstance. Didn't realize it was a trilogy when I first purchased the book, but look forward to the next release.
