Absolutely fantastic November 2, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I loved this book and can't wait for more! I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but this story was intelligent, fascinating and kept me completely enthralled the entire time. Can't wait for more of this series!
Refreshing November 1, 2008 This is one of the better fantasy books that I have read in a long time. It was refreshing to read after spending the last couple of years reading the Sword of Truth series (I am glad that one is over). Mr. Rothfuss created deep and interesting characters. I enjoyed his explanation of magic and the use of sympathy. He created a new environment and new worlds with original ideas. As one reviewer stated there was no use of the word "Dark Lord" no mention of elves, dwarfs, or gnomes. Completing refreshing.
I'm spoiled by George RR Martin October 31, 2008 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
br /Seriously, I am spoiled. I barely read Fantasy anymore; everything just sort of pales in comparison and I loose interest pretty quickly. They're either poorly written, poorly contrived, or just a knock off of some other novelist's formula.br /br /But not "The Name of the Wind", folks. This novel really stands alone with it's head held high. The concept is exceedingly original; haven't we all heard or read accounts of days long past and wondered "what really happened?". Patrick Rothfuss convincing demystifies a hero, by simply knowing how to tell a story that really confirms the old Truth is Stranger Than Fiction adage. br /br /And you know what I love the most? He won't pull a Robert Jordan (whose work I absolutely loathe) on us; he's already written all three volumes, and is having them published at annual intervals.br /br /The Bottom Line: A story amongst stories, this will leave you content and salivating for the next installment.
Not to be Ridiculous October 27, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I read as many fantasy books as I can get my hands on. Normally one or two a week for the past 10 years. This is hands down, the best new author I have read in years. This book, for me, rivals JRR Tolkien. I am just hoping the second installment keeps up the great story. What a fabulous read. Thanks so much Mr. Rothfuss.
Surprisingly good. October 26, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
The Name of the Wind is definitely in the swords-and-sorcery genre, set in a vaguely medieval preindustrial world with magic and dragons, but it's a truly marvelous example of the type. First-class writing, memorable characters, and a very human story. I anxiously await the second volume..
