very well done July 16, 2007 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Rothfuss is beyond a doubt a very talented writer. His characterization was superb. The plot and story line beautifully done. There is much mystery and intrigue throughout the whole story. I have only one complaint and if I could I would have given this 4 1/2 stars because of it. First off, the story begins wonderfully with lots of action and even a strange deadly creature, and then the action just stops. For the next 500 pages, the reader learns about the character of Kvothe and the people and situations that have made an impact on his life. This is not so bad. As a matter of fact, Rothfuss is such a wonderful writer, it is no heartache in the least, but with a slow story like this, it made it hard for me to keep reading for any length of time. I ended up stopping every 150-200 pages and reading another book, then going back to this one. Don't think I'm trying to stop you from reading this book, trust me, it was not anything so bad that it prevented the reader from enjoying the book. Learning about Kvothe's parents, teachers, enemies, was also very worthwhile. I'm looking forward to the next, which I hear will not be a very long wait.
I generally don't read fantasy... July 13, 2007 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
...but somehow this book grabbed my attention. It was mentioned by the author of a webcomic I read once in a while, and I was lucky enough to read that post while it was still on the page. Now, as I previously stated, I do not read fantasy for the most part -- I just have a hard time getting into it. I've never even read The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings (though they are on my list.)br /br /This book captured me in the first ten pages. When you think about it, that's no easy feat, especially when the reader in question stays away from that genre. I was amazed at how intricate and detailed the world Rothfuss creates was, and as the story continued more and more details were revealed, until the world almost became real for me and I couldn't put it down. Literally. (I read fast, and I finished it in two sessions, about 11 hours total.)br /br /Another comment mentioned a lack of "oomph" and a inadequate ending, but in this incidence I believe that this is all for the better. Any different ending, in my opinion, would have broken the enchantment, so to speak, because in real life is any story so exquisitely groomed? And the lack of information about certain plot points is an important part of the story, because if you know all of the information up front, there is no mystery and the tale becomes formulaic right off the bat. The ending intentionally leaves you with questions, and the way the tale is set up you know, for the most part, that by the end of the third day you will know all that Kvothe knows. In my opinion, this is the start of what could be an epic trilogy, and a fantastic debut by an incredibly talented author. Kudos, sir.
Awesome! July 11, 2007 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is the best book I've read in a long, long time. I find myself thinking of Kvothe and, of course, wanting to know MORE! br /br /The cover of the UK edition is beautiful...br /br /TMG
Breath of Fresh "Wind" July 9, 2007 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
Short and Sweet Review - one of the best Fantasy novels to come out in a long time, and more suprising is the fact that it's Mr Rothfuss' debut. I couldn't put this book down, and yet I found myself loathing the thought of finishing it. I actually began re-reading chapters to prolong the experience and drink in every facet of the story. This is hopefully the start of a monumentous literary career, one which i will happily follow throughout.
a cut above the rest July 7, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I read, a lot of fantasy and frankly, lots of its kinda dumb, just so-so, even marginal. I read it anyway but am always stoked when I read something actually GOOD. br /br /This is a great book, written well with impressive description and world building. I can't wait for the next...
