Breath of fresh air... June 22, 2007 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
Never wrote a review about a book before, so I'll keep this short. This book is a Breath of fresh air. I dreaded finishing the book and can't wait for the second (April 08'). I almost felt like I was there along with Bast and Chronicler, listening to a man who has a lot to tell. This story took me to another place. And for that Patrick, I thank you.
Deep, interesting and wondrous June 22, 2007 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
I had the pleasure of purchasing The Name of the Wind from the author. Sometimes authors buy from other authors to be supportive. Sometimes the books purchased are okay. Sometimes they are wonderful. The Name of the Wind is wonderful. br /br /Kvothe, Rothfuss's main character, is fascinating. He is mysterious, talented, thoughtful, creative and complex. The Name of the Wind is the story of Kvothe's life and his quest to find the wind's name. Kvothe never actually tells the reader the wind's name, which is probably best since names carry power. The reader also doesn't get all of Kvothe's life. We participate in his childhood and several years at the university, but there is clearly more to the story. The book ends with many questions left unanswered. But oddly enough that fact doesn't frustrate. I found my appetite whetted for more. I met a deep, wondrously interesting person in Kvothe. A person who, no matter how much time I spent talking to, would still hold secrets and have stories yet to tell.br /br /I enjoyed The Name of the Wind. At 662 pages, I was a little surprised by that lack of firm resolution, but it is set up nicely for a sequel and it looks like Patrick Rothfuss has either written or plans to write one. Kvothe's story is an interesting one of magic and mystery set in a fascinating, complex and believable world. I liked the flame-haired Kvothe and was captivated by the story of his life (or the part we see in this installment). It's well worth picking up.br / br /Reviewed by: Laurel Bradley, Author of A Wish in Timebr /A Wish In Time
One of the Best New Authors I've Read June 20, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought this book tentatively. I was looking for new authors, but I usually like to start with paperbacks in case I don't like the author's style--a much smaller investment. But this one was a Wow. I couldn't put it down, and I've already pre-ordered the second book in the series. br /br /Rothfuss is one of two new authors I've recently discovered who have caught my fancy and kept my attention throughout. I hope he writes many more.
Truly Incredible June 17, 2007 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This book has been so refreshing! I have been waiting for a book of this talent since I finished reading the books from Jordan and Martin. This book is truly incredible, grab it now!
A Wonderful First Novel June 14, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I am always skeptical of new fantasy series and new authors. The combo of both first novel and new series usually is enough to send me running. However, this book was well reviewed by Entertainment Weekly so I decided to give it a try. Even though it is over 600 pages in length, the story moves very fast and is exceptionally well written. It is told in the 1st person which is unusual for this genre and is usually another red flag. However, it works really well for this story and the character development. It reminds me of early Robert Jordan or Terry Goodkind with a bit of Rowling thrown in but is much more grounded in the "real world". The author has created a believable world, a moving story and strong characters. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of the fantasy genre as well as those who are fans of well written novels.
