I LOVED THIS BOOK May 16, 2007 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
I had my doubts at first (with the spider) but this story [...] right in when Kvothe started the tale of his life thus far. It is descriptive without being boring and the characters are thought provoking and intense. The only thing I don't like (and this is true of all authors) is when certain characters call each other's names. For example, he exchange between Kvothe and Bast. Why must they say one anothers names at the end of every line when they talk? No other characters in this book do that, just those two. Is there a reason?
Excellent debut. May 14, 2007 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I was very pleased with new author Patrick Rothfuss's intriguing epic about the early years of a hero. The protagonist Kvothe was well-rendered, and there is enough action, magic, romance and surprise for any fan of quality fantasy. This book is not as dark as many of my favorites (such as the masterpieces of George Matrin, R. Scott Bakker, or Steven Erikson), but readers of those works should like this novel as well. There are certainly glimpses that this series has the potential to one day be thought of as a classic if future books are as well-written.
Love the characters, love the voice, great story May 13, 2007 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is the kind of book I find very rarely, and it is the reason I read so many books - the hope to find a story this wonderful. From the beginning pages the story and the characters are captivating. The world created is fanciful and entertaining, and I was hooked. As the story progressed, I started to slow down so I could take it all in, and so that it wouldn't end too soon. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys adventure, fantasy or just a great story.
wonderful debut novel May 13, 2007 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
When I come across a new author, I'm always pleased. When the book actually turns out to be good, I'm jealous, but hopeful, because that means that I have a chance to do something with my own writing. Patrick, you make me sooo jealous with your debut novel. But I've got my novel file open again, thanks to you.br /br /This story has magic, music, mystery, romance, alchemy, and in spades. Kvothe is a fine protagonist, very human even though he has amazing abilities. He can be brought low by pride, just like the rest of us. It's easy to imagine him, red-haired flying, playing his lute, tackling the trials at a magical university, pursuing a girl, building a name for himself that is founded on lies but mostly true...br /br /Beware: this book has an ending that will leave you desperate for more. Me, at least, and I didn't expect it. But I very much look forward to reading more in the Kingkiller Chronicle. Well done, Patrick.br /br /(Bought on a thursday night, finished on saturday night, and that's only because my roommate and I went shopping fri night. It would have been finished much earlier if not for that. Read Robin Hobb's review and knew I had to have it!)
Outstanding book May 12, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I loved this book. I'm military so with not too much time to read it took me a few days to really get started reading this book, but by the time I had made it into the second chapter I couldn't put it down. I find it hard to believe that this is anyone's debut novel.br /
